What is The Short Review?
Each monthly issue of The
Short Review brings you original reviews of new,
not-quite-so-new and classic collections and anthologies, written by
reviewers many of whom are
also short story writers themselves and who love short fiction.
To ensure some measure of
objectivity, we ask that none of our reviewers review the work of an
author or publisher that they have any connection to (at least at the
time of writing the review).
But
because reviewing is by its nature a subjective business, we want to
give you more than one opinion, so every review will include links to
reviews by other publications, where available. To whet your appetite
further, every review has "If you liked this, you might also like..."
recommendations.
Each author whose work is reviewed has an Author Page including, wherever possible, an interview with the author about the collection, about their writing and other short story-related topics we are curious about.
On the Links page are links to
more sites where you can find book reviews, articles on the short
story, and competitions for short story collections.
Find something to read by browsing the list of reviews, authors, author interviews or categories.
Why?
I
love short stories. I love writing
them and I love reading them. But it's not so easy to find reviews of
short story collections, especially ones published by small presses.
They just don't get the column inches that novels receive. It's no
wonder they don't sell as well as novels - or that publishers think
readers don't want to read short stories.
So I
thought I would create a space just for short story collections and
anthologies, to give them their turn in the spotlight.
Ok, I
have to confess - my motives are not entirely pure. My own short story
collection is due to be published in June 2008 by Salt Publishing, and
two other writer friends are also publishing collections next year.
Looking around to see where collections get exposure, who takes notice
when a new collection is published, was a sobering experience. The
Short Review is my attempt to redress the balance.
